Recognized as one of the world’s most successful violinists and pedagogues, Sean Gao has solo performed for many world leaders and with 100 plus orchestras worldwide. As the Trustees Distinguished Professor of Violin at the University of Delaware and visiting professor of 4 major universities in China, Professor Gao has also been a renowned performing art administrator since 1997. Hundreds of music students from China and the U.S. annually attend the internationally acclaimed Master Players Music Festival he founded in Delaware. ZHANG, Ying 张莹

President, Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center
匹兹堡中华文化中心总裁

Zhang Ying, currently the President of the Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center, founded the Pittsburgh Chinese Arts Troupe and Drama Society, serving as its first troupe director. Over the years, she has actively organized and participated in cultural festivals, Chinese New Year galas, and various community cultural events hosted by the Cultural Center. She planned the Spring Festival Galas for the Year of the Tiger and the Year of the Rabbit and served as the director of the Year of the Dragon Gala, receiving widespread acclaim. Additionally, she has produced and starred in plays such as “where am I”  and  “Ivy League Dream”  making significant contributions to promoting Chinese culture and enriching community cultural activities.

6-WIRE Piano Trio 6炫跨界钢琴三重奏

Inspired by the historical connection between the Erhu, the Chinese 2-stringed violin, and the 4-stringed Western violin – both essential leading instruments, 6-WIRE was founded in 2010 by two virtuoso musicians: violinist Sean Gao and erhu master Cathy Yang, who compose and perform contemporary, classical, chamber, world music, and jazz with the remarkable pianist and arranger, Matthew Brower. 6-WIRE celebrates diversity in its performances, weaving stories into its concerts, transforming how live instrumental music is experienced.

ALLARD, Ava 叶爱文

Ava Allard, a Senior at Carnegie Mellon University, majoring in Chinese Studies with a minor in Business Administration. She has been studying Mandarin for the past 12 years, and have grown a deep appreciation for both Chinese language and culture. She is fascinated by the depth and expressiveness of Chinese language, and appreciates the rich history of Chinese culture, as well as its unique perspective on community and tradition.

BOULDEN, Morgan

Dancer  舞者

Morgan Boulden is an Elementary Education major and Dance minor at the University of Delaware completing her senior year. In her dancing career at the university, she has participated in spring concerts, the UD Jazz Dance Ensemble, A Jazzy Nutcracker, and is the current president of the National Honors Society for Dance Arts. In these various productions, she has worked as both a performer and choreographer. She also works as a dance teacher on the side at a local dance studio that she grew up dancing for. After graduating from the university, she plans to attend graduate school to earn her Master’s degree in Dance Education.

BROWER, Matthew

Pianist 钢琴演奏家

Hailed as “superb” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Matthew Brower is a pianist, coach, and educator who brings vision and sensitivity to a variety of genres, from classical piano, chamber music, opera, and art song to musical theatre and jazz. He is an Artist Affiliate at Emory University and Agnes Scott College, a faculty member of the Atlanta Music High School at the Community Music Centers of Atlanta, and a member of 6-WIRE, an ensemble-in-residence at the University of Delaware. He received his Doctoral and Master’s degrees in Collaborative Piano from the University of Michigan, and his Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

BROWN, Kevin Eliot
Double/Electric Bass 低音提琴演奏家

Kevin Eliot Brown, double bass, earned his M.M. in double bass performance (classical) and B.M. in Jazz Studies (double bass performance) from the University of North Texas, where he studied with Jeff Bradetich and Fred Hamilton. His performance and recording experience includes Marvin Hamlisch, Rich Little, Regis Philbin, Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Daryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, David Sanborn, Ronan Tynan, the Drifters, Monkeyworks, Mike Richmond, the Staten Island Symphony, Metro Lyric Opera, Orchestra of St. Peter-by-the-Sea, the Paper Mill Playhouse, the New Jersey Pops, and the New Jersey Ballet. He holds faculty positions in the Music schools of both Montclair State University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. At MSU, Mr. Brown has taught Double bass, Music Theory, Audition Repertoire for double bass, Aural Skills, coached chamber music, taught Intro to Music for nonmajors, and directs the MSU New Music Ensemble. At FDU, Mr. Brown teaches Double bass, electric bass, World Music, History of Jazz, History of Classical music, and History of American Popular Music from 1950-2000.

DOTTERER, Sophia
Dancer  舞者

Sophia Dotterer is a sophomore at the University of Delaware, where she is pursuing a major in  Cognitive Science with a minor in Dance. Originally from Ridgefield Connecticut, Sophia grew  up with a foundation in ballet, with Swan Lake holding a special place as her favorite show. At  UD, she has performed in the Dance Minor Concert and is excited to be featured in the  upcoming Jazzy Nutcracker. Combining interests in both dance and cognitive science, Sophia  continues to explore the connection between movement and the mind.

DU, Linze 杜林泽

Linze is a lead engineer in battery research and development with a remarkable talent for event hosting. With eight years of experience as a master of ceremonies, Linze brings a unique combination of technical expertise and vibrant stage presence to every event. Twice awarded first place in the National Chinese Language Competition, Linze’s accomplishments highlight a deep commitment to excellence in communication and performance.

DUNLAP, Ky

Dancer  舞者

Ky is a third-year student Psychology major BA with a double minor in Dance and Politics and Social Justice at the University of Delaware. They grew up dancing their whole lives and continue to do so at the University of Delaware. Ky has performed in various performances at UD, such as Suite Blackness and previous Dance Minor Concerts. He was given the opportunity and is now working as a social justice peer educator at the Center of Intercultural Engagement at UD to educate and provide safe spaces for students on campus. His future endeavors involve continuing to dance while integrating an interdisciplinary approach to social justice.

GOLDMAN, Ben

Percussionist 打击乐演奏家

Ben Goldman is a drummer, percussionist, and music educator who “demonstrates his aptitude to adapt.” (Susan Frances, Jazz2Love). Recently back from a stopover in the midwest, Ben is on faculty at Cecil College in Maryland and has a full percussion studio at Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. Ben is an alumnus of The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass, where he toured nationally. Ben frequently collaborates with 6ix Wire, a World Music ensemble in residence at The University of Delaware. In addition to touring with these ensembles, Ben has been on faculty at several international music festivals. Ben led the Peace Drums Orchestra and performed in faculty ensembles at the Tefen Music Festival in Israel. At the 2017 and 2019 Master Players Festival hosted at the University of Delaware, Ben directed the World Music ensembles and taught in the percussion division. Ben has also been a clinician and solo recitalist at Coastal Carolina University and Joliet Junior College. Always looking to collaborate, Ben recently helped launch a tuba/percussion duo called “The Ben Diagram Duo”  with tubist Dr. Benjamin Vasko that has performed recitals across New England and the Mid Atlantic regions. 

As the bandleader for Glen Boldman & The Philadelphia 5 and The Ben Goldman Project, his compositions have been hailed as “bubbling [and] long on style” (Dodie Miller-Gould of LemonWire) and as “a fresh outlook on jazz [with a] solid dose of funk and groove” (Brice Boorman of Chalked UP Magazine). Ben holds a BFA from California Institute of the Arts, an MM from University of Delaware, and a masters in Education Policy from The University of Illinois, where he focused on the performing arts and education in conflict zones. HARVEY-MARTIN, Tamia

Tamia is a writer, a global citizen and lifelong scholar with a love of story. Though her interests began long before her engagement in foreign languages classes in high school, Tamia participated in programs like the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Global and International Studies in 2017, the National Security and Language Initiative for Youth program where she spent an academic year in Changzhou in 2018, and the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Summer Institute in Japan in 2023. She is currently completing her M.F.A. in Radio-Television-Film with a specialization in Screenwriting at The University of Texas at Austin. Tamia earned her B.A. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania.

HIRSCH, Hal
Guitarist 吉他演奏家

Hal is a versatile guitarist and composer who performs and records with a wide variety of artists in the NJ area. For the past few years, he has been working with singer Alex Kariotis. Alex recently released a set of recordings from Abbey Road studios, as well as numerous livestreams. Over the past year, Hal has been collaborating with NJ artist Sarah Hodd. Their song, ‘The Ghost Inside Your Head’ is currently streaming and their latest single ‘Raise Some Hell’ will be released in November. In 2022, Hal released an album of original music, ‘RoughHouse – Ground Floor’, which can be found on streaming services. Hal earned his music degree at Rutgers University and studied with classical guitarist Michael Newman and jazz guitarists Howard Alden, Vic Juris and Flip Peters.

JIA, Yong-Hong 賈永紅
Chinese Opera Singer 戏曲演唱家

Chinese opera singer, actress, teacher of performing arts.  Ms. Jia studied voice at the Central Traditional Singing and Dancing School from age 13.  She also attended Peking Traditional Opera School specialized in Hua Dan (vivacious young girl) roles. She performed throughout China in many major Kunqu productions such as the Peony Pavilion.  From 1991 to 1999 Ms. Jia also engaged in various TV and movie productions. As a leading actress, she won many awards for her acting.  Ms. Jia was invited by New York Lincoln Center Festival production, the Peony pavilion in 1999, then performed this production around the world, in countries such as France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Australia and Singapore, etc. She also performed Peking opera and folk songs for many charitable organizations and communities in different cities across North America. Currently, she is the teacher for two Huaxia Chinese Schools in New Jersey teaching singing, dancing, acting, Kunqu and Peking Opera.   Ms. Jia is also managing both nonprofit organizations the Renaissance Chinese Opera Society and Renaissance Academy based in Matawan, NJ.​

北京出生,於13歲開始學習聲樂演唱,先後從師於中央民族歌舞團羅明英老師,總政歌舞團方琦老師,中國歌劇舞劇院王家祥老師,後又先後師從於中國音樂學院盧德伍教授、金鐵霖院長及馬秋華教授,曾於1987年開始就讀於現北京市戲曲職業學院學習昆曲舞台表演專业。畢業後服務于北京北方昆曲劇院任演員。 本人於21 歲起參加影視演出,主演中央電視台及陜西電視台合拍的音樂電視劇《王貴與李香香》 任女主人翁-李香香,曾獲大眾電視飛天獎提名獎。後又主演多部電影及電視劇,如:中國兒童電影制片廠盧剛導演的電影《熒屏奇遇》、鄭洞天導演的電影《人之初》,先後任女一號、女二號。後在著名話劇導演孟京輝導演的電視劇《阿方與 金珠》中飾金珠。在著名影視劇導演陳力導演的電視劇《青年毛澤東》中飾青年菜暢,繼而又在《夾縫》、《天橋夢》、《戲說慈禧》、《怪王別傳》等劇中分別飾演主要角色。曾在北京電視台《七色光》欄目擔任過“多米諾骨牌”節目的主持人。 在中国儿童电影制片厂拍摄电影《人之初》《荧屏奇遇》之后,曾受邀在兒影表演班教授过儿童戏剧表 演課。 1999 年應美國紐約林肯中心邀請來美參加全本 55 出<牡丹亭>演出,主演春香。此劇在1999 年夏季紐約林肯中心藝術節上首演造成轟動,後在 1999 年至 2003 年期間曾隨林肯中心《牡丹亭》劇組出訪法國、義大利、澳大利亞、 丹麥、新加坡等多國公演。 2001 年一月與紐約Chinese Opera Work Shop 的華裔導演馮光宇教授合作排演出了新編英語京劇<小紅帽>,劇中主演小紅帽,並公演多場成爲紐約巿許多中小學生的課程活動之一,深受紐約中小學生的歡迎。曾在2001年紐約華人新春晚會上與百老汇会華裔明星王洛勇先生(西貢小姐主演),合演舞台喜劇小品<拔牙>。多立個來曾多次參加過紐約、洛杉磯、 西雅圖等京昆劇社公演的昆曲、京 劇。並經常參加新州社區活動, 爲老人、學校、賑災等 傳播義演昆曲、京劇、歌唱藝術。並組織安 排各項兒童表演節目,爲社區服務。現任新州兩家華夏中文學校 (華夏愛迪生、華夏南 部) 教師, 教中文、 聲樂、 舞蹈、戲劇表演。並任 職於新澤西洲 Montessori Matawan 和 Montessori Manalapan 兩家學校的中文教師及中興國劇社新州總幹事。​

LEE, Jonny Jr.

Jonny is an actor, singer, and writer. He was most recently seen as Lewis in The Fantasticks at Island City Stage and Bobby Bob in Soft Power Bobby by David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori at the Signature Theatre. Jonny has starred in several world premier musicals including Lit Ning in Gold Mountain the Musical, Kenny in The Dragon King’s Daughter, and Yun in Eastbound. Other credits include Manjiro in Pacific Overtures, Thuy in Miss Saigon, Ching Ho in Thoroughly Modern Mille, and Henry in Next To Normal.

LI, Bo 李波
Cellist 大提琴演奏家

Cellist Bo Li is celebrated for his versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and educator. A laureate of the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, he has earned awards from the Chinese Cultural Department and the Presser Foundation in the U.S. He also won top prizes at China’s National Cello Competition and the New England Conservatory Concerto Competition.

Bo Li has performed internationally in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Tchaikovsky Hall, and Symphony Hall in Shanghai. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Baltimore Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, and Wuhan Philharmonic, earning praise as an “eloquent soloist” from the Baltimore Sun. His performances have been featured on NPR, and he has recorded a solo album with Tian-Tian in Beijing, as well as chamber music albums with labels in Hong Kong and the U.S.

As an active chamber musician, Bo Li has collaborated with leading artists worldwide. A dedicated educator, he has taught at international festivals and institutions and co-founded the Master Players Festival. He is a distinguished visiting professor at Wuhan Conservatory of Music and Hua Zhong University of Science and Technology.

Since joining the Baltimore Symphony in 2000, Bo Li has performed at prestigious venues across Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has frequently appeared as a guest with other major orchestras in the U.S. and has served as a guest principal with the Singapore Symphony. In 2023, he founded the highly successful Lunar New Year Concert at the BSO, establishing it as a celebrated annual event and fostering new community connections and donor support.

Born into a musical family in China, he received his early education at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1991, he came to the U.S. to pursue further study at Illinois State University and the New England Conservatory in Boston.

Peking Opera Singer 京剧乾旦(男旦)演唱家

Mr. Li Junqing, master graduated from NYU, is the program and development director of the New York Chinese Opera Society, and board member of the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society. He is the member of Chinese research association of Peking opera Artist Cheng Yanqiu, and was enlightened by Nanjing famous Cheng School fancier Shi Ming and Xu Aobo,as well educated by renowned Cheng School master Xu Jiping and renowned Peking opera master Li Shuyuan. He was also the member of Nanjing Kunqu Society and New York Kunqu Society. He was enlightened by Kunqu scholar Wang Xiaodan and well educated by renowned Kunqu master Shi Jiehua and Cheng Min.

李骏青, 纽约梨园社项目总监,费城京剧社理事,习昆曲俞家唱, 京剧程派。为中国程派艺术研究会会员,由南京名票时明、徐奥博开蒙学习程派,并得著名程派琴师徐季平传授、著名京剧表演艺术家李淑媛等老师指点。亦为南京昆曲社与纽约海外昆曲社成员, 由京昆世家汪小丹老师开蒙学习昆曲,师承上海昆剧团“七梁十柱” 之一,昆曲表演艺术家史洁华老师学习旦角艺术,得其亲授《活 捉》、《思凡》,《痴诉》等经典传统折子戏;从昆曲表演艺术家,海外昆曲社艺术总监,江苏省昆剧院一级演员程敏老师学习小生艺术, 得其亲授《奇双会》、《玉簪记》、《牡丹亭》等传统剧目。

MAYER, Neal

Singing Actor/Cast member of Shanghai Sonatas – a new musical
美国新音乐剧《上海奏鸣曲》剧组演员

Neal Mayer is a stage and screen veteran who has appeared on Broadway in Les Misérables, the national tours of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and 101 Dalmatians (directed by Jerry Zaks), and off-Broadway in Forbidden Broadway, Mark Felt, Superstar, How to Steal an Election, and God Shows Up. He originated the role of St. Aphrodisius in the North American premiere of Alan Menken & Stephen Schwartz’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and can be heard on the studio cast recording. Regionally, Neal has acted at La Jolla Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Bay Street Theater, Arena Stage, North Shore Music Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse, Ivoryton Playhouse and many others. Some of Neal’s favorite roles include Malvolio in Twelfth Night, Fagin in Oliver!, Harry in Luv, Charley in Death of a Salesman, and Harding in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Neal’s film credits include Call Jane, and A Wounded Fawn and his TV credits include “Poker Face,” “Russian Doll,” “The Blacklist,” “FBI: Most Wanted” and “The Equalizer.” He has also done numerous comedy sketches for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” Neal is happy to work with Sean Gao once again, having been a part of the “Shanghai Sonatas” development process since 2020.

MERCANTE, Augustine
Vocalist/Countertenor 假声男高音歌唱家

Praised for his “lyrical intensity and the way he polishes each word with lapidarian ecstasy”, Augustine Mercante enjoys an active career performing repertoire from the Baroque to the newly-created, performing regularly with organizations in the region including Opera Philadelphia, Brandywine Baroque, Delaware Choral Arts, Master Players Concert Series, Newark Symphony Orchestra, Crescendo Music, and the Serafin Ensemble. He has appeared at festivals both locally and abroad including the Tanglewood Music Festival, Salzburg Festival, Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, Serafin Summer Music Festival, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Wilmington Fringe Festival, and the International Gluck Festival and has toured internationally and in the US with the American Spiritual Ensemble.

Gus completed his Artist Diploma in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar studying with soprano Edith Wiens and performing at the Prinzregententheater in Munich and with Nurnberg Opera. He holds degrees from the University of North Texas and the University of Delaware, where he was honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Robert King Memorial Scholarship.  He has twice been awarded fellowships from the Delaware Division of the Arts and was a winner of the Austrian American Foundation’s competition which earned him a scholarship to The Mozarteum in Salzburg. Gus can be heard on clarinetist Christopher Nichols’ recording Almost All-American on the Albany label and is a featured soloist on cellist Ovidiu Marinescu’s Parma Recordings album to be released in 2024.  He has performed live on Philadelphia’s WRTI and his performance of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin from the 2013 Tanglewood Festival, for which The New York Times called him a “glowing countertenor”, was heard several times on New York Public Radio, WQXR.

MIAO, Yimin
Chinese Woodwind Performer 中国民族管乐器演奏家

Yimin Miao, a Chinese woodwind virtuoso and educator, hails from the vibrant city of Shanghai, China. His musical journey commenced at the age of nine under the tutelage of Xunfa Yu, a celebrated bamboo flutist. Miao’s talent led him to become a member of the prestigious Shanghai Traditional Orchestra before his move to the United States.

In 1999, Miao founded the Ba Ban Chinese Music Society in Queens, New York, a testament to his commitment to preserving and sharing Chinese musical traditions. His cultural impact extends beyond the stage to educational settings, where he conducted Chinese Music Workshops at renowned institutions like NYU and Columbia University, as well as public schools and libraries.

Miao’s ensemble has presented captivating performances, including “Changes – the Union of Man and Nature,” “Red – Lunar New Year,” and “Golden Age of the 1930s & 40s Shanghai Jazz Music”. These diverse showcases, along with “Silk and Bamboo Music from the Yangtze River,” reflect Miao’s dedication to bringing the rich tapestry of Chinese music to global audiences.

Complementing his artistic pursuits, Miao has conducted educational programs and workshops, notably “Music and Dance from China”. His impactful contributions earned him the Outstanding Cultural Contribution Award from the NYC Council, a recognition of his significant role in bridging cultural divides through the universal language of music.

缪宜民曾在纽约大学东亚系教授中国吹管乐器演奏课程, 并多次在卡内基音乐厅、林 肯艺术中心和大都会艺术博物馆举办音乐会。此外, 他还在耶鲁大学、康奈尔大学、纽约大 学、哥伦比亚大学以及纽约各公立学校和公共图书馆开展“中国音乐工作坊”的讲座与推 广。

MICHAELS, Alan

Alan Michaels is a passionate educator and accomplished musician. Holding a BM and MM from Mannes College of Music, Alan has played a pivotal role in developing the music program at The Peddie School, where he currently serves as Arts Department Chair and Director of Music. His commitment to mentorship was recently showcased when he led a masterclass for aspiring musicians at the University of Texas El Paso.

As a seasoned drummer and percussionist, Alan’s Broadway credits include Falsettos, Mary Poppins, West Side Story, A Chorus Line, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Grand Hotel, and Annie Get Your Gun, with additional work on productions like Scotland PA, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Radio City Christmas Spectacular. His career has also taken him internationally, performing in London with Alexander Kariotis and the Rock Opera Orchestra. Following performances with 6-Wire in Delaware and Maryland, Alan is excited to rejoin the group for today’s concert.

MURPHY, Denise J.

Denise J. Murphy is the Director of Dance and Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Delaware. She holds an MFA in Choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and a BS in Dance Education from New York University. Denise currently teaches various technique and theory courses and choreographs new works within the Department of Theatre and Dance. Denise has previously taught at schools and universities such as University of the Arts, West Chester University, High Point University, UNCG and The Ailey School and received teacher training in Horton Technique. Her work and research has been presented at conferences and festivals such as ACDA, NDEO, and the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Denise lead a group of students to the Kennedy Center with her work, Vanishing Souls | Falling Embers where she received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography from Dance Magazine and ACDA. Denise has received various grants and awards and developed an interest in the intersection of dance and personal histories and how they are embedded into the process of dance making through a Library Research research grant, awarded by Barnard College. As a performer, Denise performed throughout NYC and North Carolina and has worked with choreographers and mentors such as Jan Van Dyke, Deborah Damast, Douglas Dunn, and Kriota Willberg and was a member of IsadoraNow, a dance company dedicated to the legacy of Isadora Duncan.

SILVA, Christopher 罗克凡

Christopher Norris Silva is an undergraduate senior at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Political Science and Chinese. His interest in Chinese Studies began in 2019 as a high school student when he visited Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. In 2023, he studied and completed research abroad in Taichung with a scholarship from the Chinese Nationality Room, where he won First Prize in Social Issues Research at the 2023 Tunghai University International Conference of International Colleges. He has worked for the Center for Ethnic Studies Research since 2023, conducting research on Pittsburgh’s Asian American communities. His Honors Thesis, The Evolving Linguistic Landscape of American Chinatowns, examines the role of Chinese dialects in constructing Chinese communities of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, as well as the linguistic challenges they face.

SMITH, Vincent Pierce

Vincent Pierce Smith is a multi-instrumentalist, dance accompanist, composer, and teacher. He has toured internationally and performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and NJPAC amongst many other renowned venues. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music from Rutgers University. In 2017 Vincent performed with the 6-Wire Band for President Joe Biden and other major donors at the Wilhelmina Press Thompson Theater in Delaware. Vincent has played for Modern and African dance forms since 2005 under the mentorship of Robert Benford, a key figure in the development of Modern Dance Accompaniment. Vincent also accompanies the complex Kathak dance of North India and has studied and performed in India and America. He enjoys teaching and spreading musical knowledge by using multi cultural instruments and styles to encourage communication, understanding, and acceptance through the language of music.

Formed in 2021 by students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, the Tartan Quartet is an award-winning ensemble featuring Andrew Gray and Forest Ma on violin, Kai Su on viola, and Viviana Antonio on cello. The quartet has been coached by esteemed chamber music mentors, including David Harding, Anne Williams, and Christopher Wu, with additional coaching from Dimitri Papadimitriou, Angela Park and Claudia Chudacoff. Andrew, Forest, Kai, and Viviana aspire to bring their music to the professional stage and to the Pittsburgh community.

Their artistry has been recognized with First Prize at the Carnegie Mellon University Chamber Music Competition for two consecutive years (2023, 2024), as well as being named winners of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Audition in 2024, where they were selected to perform in the Major Audition concert. They have also been invited for a live broadcast on WQED radio. The Tartan Quartet has participated in masterclasses with renowned musicians and ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet as part of the “50 for the Future” initiative, Robin Scott of the Ying Quartet, and the Escher Quartet.

Committed to fostering a collaborative music environment, the Tartan Quartet actively supports their peers at Carnegie Mellon University through performances and recordings of new works by emerging composers.

VAN DUYN, Rose Grace

Rose Grace Van Duyn is a sophomore at the University of Delaware, majoring in plant science and minoring in dance. She began ballet classes at age 5 and has trained in both ballet and modern dance ever since. Rose Grace attended Cab Calloway School of the Arts, a performing arts middle and high school, where she majored in dance performance. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, and upcycling clothes to sell in Brooklyn.

WU, Yanlai 吴燕来

Wu Yanlai was admitted to the Affiliated High School of Beijing Dance Academy at the age of 12. After graduation, she was admitted to the Performance Department of Beijing Dance Academy. She then joined the Youth Dance Company. In 2004, she went to Pittsburgh to set up her own dance school. She began her teaching and entrepreneurial career. For 20 years, Yanlai has been dedicated to teaching in order to let students get in touch with real Chinese dance and let the community see the real Chinese dance art. Yanlai not only teaches in her own school, but is also often invited to teach Chinese dance to local schools and universities. She has trained thousands of students. In May 2015, Yanlai carefully designed, directed and choreographed a large-scale dance Chinese version of the Nutcracker, which was grandly staged at the Pittsburgh Grand Theater. It was a huge success and became a good story. Almost all local mainstream media have reported. In 2015, the largest local media held an event of 100 outstanding people from 100 countries, and Yanlai was selected as a representative of China. In 2017, 44 nominees from 25 countries attended the Second Immigrant Entrepreneur Celebration and Awards Ceremony in Pittsburgh. Among the only 7 winners, Wu Yanlai was the winner in the Culture and Arts category.

吴燕来12岁考入北京舞蹈学院附中,毕业后考入北京舞蹈学院表演系,之后留校进入青年舞团。2004年到匹兹堡成立了自己的舞蹈学校。开始了自己的教学和创业生涯。 20年来,燕来老师一直兢兢业业致力于教学,为的是让学生们接触到真正的中国民族舞蹈,让社区看到真正的中国舞蹈艺术。燕来不仅仅只在自己的学校教课,同时也常常应邀给当地的学校和大学教授中国舞,培养过的学生数以千计。2015年5月燕来老师精心设计,导演和编排出大型舞蹈中国版胡桃夹子在匹兹堡大剧场隆重上演,取得巨大成功,一时成为佳话。当地几乎所有的主流媒体都多次报道过燕来舞校和燕来老师。2015年当地最大的媒体搞了一个100个国家100位优秀人物活动,燕来作为中国的代表入选。2017年来自25个国家的44名被提名者参加了在匹兹堡第二届移民企业家庆祝暨颁奖典礼。 仅有的7名获奖者中吴燕来是文化艺术类的获得者。

XU, Terisa 许筱婷

Terisa is an accomplished vocalist and educator who has been a celebrated part of the Pittsburgh Lunar New Year Gala for many years. Known for her passionate performances and dedication to the community, she has led and conducted the Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center (PCCC) Chorus, elevating it to one of the most recognized choral groups in the Pittsburgh area. Under her direction, the chorus has been invited to perform at numerous prestigious events across the city, showcasing traditional Chinese music and cultural heritage. In addition to choral work, Theresa has also brought her talents to melodramas, captivating audiences with her versatility and emotive presence.

Terisa began her formal music training in childhood, later earning a bachelor’s degree in voice performance and music education from Beijing Contemporary Music Academy, where she held a solo recital in 2013. She has received numerous accolades, including a Gold Medal at the Singapore International Chinese Arts Festival (2010) and a Silver Medal at the U.S. International Choir Festival (2012), and first Place in the Pittsburgh Division of the “Voice of China” Oversea Competition . Active in the broader Pittsburgh community, Terisa performs at Chinese Cultural Festivals, serves as a vocal instructor for the children’s choir at Pittsburgh Chinese School, and frequently judges art competitions at the University of Pittsburgh. She also contributes her expertise on the Board of Directors of the PCCC, reinforcing her commitment to cultural education and community enrichment.

XUE, Yi Ming Sofyia 薛艺茗

Yi Ming is a Chinese-American independent artist who strives to become a bridge between the Chinese and American Music and Entertainment Industries. Yi Ming is fluent in both Mandarin-Chinese and English. She has performed for most of her life, beginning with Dao Ma Dan Peking Chinese Opera before training in voice. Starting when she was 12, Yi Ming has been an avid vocal competitor in different singing competitions in and around the U.S. tri-state area and internationally, including New York Sinovision’s “Teen Talent Show” and Beijing’s “Water Cube International Chinese Singing Competition – Shui Li Fang,” where she placed Bronze. During the pandemic, she began putting cover and collaboration videos on China’s BiliBili platform and has since gained a total of 28K fans. Yi Ming graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2022, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music. That same year, she sang the OST theme song for China’s CCTV broadcasted TV serial, “Qing Shan Bu Mo” – “Wo Lia You Ke Lao”. In the summer of 2022, she was honored to be the only Chinese singer to perform with international musicians and celebrities for Disney+’s “Harmonious Live” showcase, live-streamed from Epcot Disney World, as well as perform in New Light Theatre’s regional production of “RENT” as Mimi. In 2023, she was champion of the United States Regional Preliminary Auditions for “Sing! China – Zhong Guo Hao Sheng Yin”. Most recently, she was thrilled to be in “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 – Da Hui Xing” (Shanghai) as part of the Ensemble and first cover for Sonya. Yi Ming Sofyia Xue is very excited to be on-board a new off-off Broadway production of “Loneliness Was a Pandemic” as the all seeing AI, Robot 2.

Cathy Yang, an accomplished erhu performer, stands out as a prominent Chinese artist gracing the stages of both the American and global music scenes. Currently serving as the artist-in-residence at the University of Delaware and a graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music, Cathy Yang has garnered prestigious awards, including the “Dragon Sound Cup” Gold Award and the “Chinese National Culture Fund Award” Gold Award. 

Cathy Yang has performed twice for President Joe Biden and garnered significant attention in 2022 for her collaboration with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the National Symphony Orchestra in the premiere of the new work “Journey.” This has established her as a leading figure among the new generation of Chinese musicians in the U.S. In 2024, Cathy Yang and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra brought Mr. Tan Dun’s Oscar-winning “Best Original Score” from “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” – featuring erhu and symphony – to the stage in Washington, D.C., creating an extraordinary sensation.

YANG, Jiayue 杨佳月

Beginning her piano career at age 5, Jiayue culminated her decades of formal classical training at prestigious institutions including Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Maryland School of Music with a doctoral degree under the tutelage of piano virtuoso Santiago Rodriguez. Along the way, she won numerous competitions, including the International Keyboard Association of Young Artists Piano Competition, Homer Ulrich Piano Competition, and MPTA Elizabeth Davis Commemorative Competition. At the prime of her performing pianist career, she has played many important concerts and recitals, including Beethoven’s “Emporor” with Landon Symphonette, “The Yellow River” Piano Concerto with the McLean Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, and on tour at the Shanghai Grand Theater and the Beijing Concert Hall with national television broadcast via China Central Television and China Eastern TV. As a beloved music educator and friend to the artistic and social communities both in Washington and in China, Jiayue has graced many events of the luminaries, including the highly coveted January 2013 South Pole Forum.

ZHOU, Yi 周懿
Guqin/Pipa Performer 古琴/琵琶演奏家

Praised for her “breathtaking” technique and expressiveness by The Washington Post, Zhou Yi was born in Shanghai, China. Discovered by a talent scout for Chinese instrumentalists at the age of five, she went on to graduate from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before moving to New York to pursue her music career.

As a concert soloist, Zhou Yi has performed at prestigious venues worldwide, impressing audiences with her masterful playing and vast repertoire. Career highlights include a Young People’s Concert with the New York Philharmonic; Bun-Ching Lam’s Sudden Thunder with the Sinfonieorchester Münster; Zuqiang Wu’s Sisters of the Grassland with the Ohio Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, among others. She has also premiered works by young composers in a range of styles, such as Qian Zhou’s Qu Shui Ming Yun (Sounds from the Winding Water) for qin and electronics at the MATA Festival, and Du Yun’s soundtrack for David Henry Huang’s off-Broadway production Kung Fu.

In addition to her solo career, Zhou Yi has made guest appearances in operatic and festival productions, including Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber at San Francisco Opera, Huang Ruo’s Paradise Interrupted at Lincoln Center Festival, and Dr. Sun Yat-sen at Santa Fe Opera.

With a distinctive musical style that fuses traditional Chinese music with contemporary sounds, Zhou Yi continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her captivating performances and artistry.

作为一名独奏音乐家, 周懿的足迹遍布世界各地,她合作过的乐团有: 纽约爱乐乐团青 年音乐会, 大都会交响乐团, 加州太平洋交响乐团, 俄亥俄州扬斯敦交响乐团等。她的代表 演奏作品有: 与美国魔蔓达弦乐四重奏携手演绎谭盾的《鬼戏》, 与德国明斯特交响乐团合 作林品晶的《惊雷》, 与俄亥俄扬斯敦交响乐团合作吴祖强的《草原姐妹》, 等等。此外, 她还 世界首演了多位年轻作曲家风格迥异的新作, 如在MATA音乐节上演奏的周倩的《曲水鸣 韵》(为古琴与电子乐而作), 以及杜韵为黄哲伦的外百老汇剧作《功夫》谱写的配乐。

ZHOU, Zijian 周子健

Chinese Theatre Artist 中国戏曲节目主持人

Mr. Zhou Zijian is a theatre scholar, playwright, and actor. He is a PhD candidate at the Shanghai Theatre Academy and a Visiting Scholar in the City University of New York theatre program. He holds a master’s degree from the China National Academy of Arts. Zhou specializes in performing laosheng (elder male roles) in Peking Opera and Kunqu. His major works include traditional operas such as Ballad Singing (Tanci), Longing for Home (Wang Xiang), and The Fourth Son Visits His Mother (Silang Tanmu). Zhou has also been involved in modern theater productions, such as the play Becoming Butterfly, part of the Shanghai Theatre Academy’s doctoral practical project, and The Mischievous Grim Reaper. He has also worked on experimental Kunqu, including The Dream of Zhaoji(Meng Lian Yu Linglong).

Pittsburgh Xiaobo Waist Drum Dance Group 匹兹堡小波腰鼓队

The Chinese waist drum dance is part of traditional folk dance with a long history, and  is commonly seen on various festive occasions. The red drum is strapped to the waist by colorful ribbons, allowing the drummers great mobility as they play upbeat rhythms and dance to the joyful music.  Xiaobo’s Waist Drum Dance Group includes both Chinese and Americans. They have performed in several states, such as Pa, Ohio, Seattle and Las Vegas for international festivals, community parades, and Chinese New Year galas. They are well received by an international audience.

Haihua Youth Symphony 海华青少年室内乐团

Since its establishment 21 years ago, Haihua Orchestra has represented the United States three times to participate in the World Youth and Children’s Arts Festival, and has visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an and other cities in China twice to perform, which has been warmly welcomed by the audience. Haihua’s travels include New York, France, England, Vienna, and Australia.

Yanlai Dance academy, just past its 20 year anniversary,  is the only place in the Great Pittsburgh area that offers dance instructions and teachings including both western and eastern traditions and cultures. Flying Strings Youth Ensemble 丝线飞扬青少年乐团

The Flying Strings Youth Ensemble is a registered non-profit organization composed of a vibrant group of talented young musicians and students. The ensemble combines traditional Chinese instruments, such as the pipa, guzheng, erhu, and zhongruan, with Western instruments like the violin, cello, piano, and flute, creating a unique blend of Chinese traditional and Western classical music. This fusion offers young musicians a platform to showcase their talents.          

With members located across the United States, the ensemble has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Howard University, and the Philadelphia Art Museum. They have also participated in a variety of cultural events, including Chinese New Year celebrations, jazz festivals, and cultural festivals.

As the original school to each 8 complete martial arts as one, Oom Yung Doe’s 4-level system of teaching Traditional Martial Arts is one of the strongest & fastest ways to build lasting health, relieve stress, and develop self-defense ability. The unique system of movement and instruction enables students to learn Kung Fu, Tai Chi, 18 Chinese Weapons, and Bagua Zhang, amongst other Japanese and Korean Martial Arts, all at a master level. CMU ARCC Dance Team

Awareness of Roots in Chinese Culture (ARCC) is a student organization at Carnegie Mellon dedicated to increasing awareness of Chinese culture on campus by hosting free events such as Hotpot Night and Mid-Autumn Festival! In the spring, we also host the largest cultural show on campus: Spring Theatre! This semester, we started a subsidiary organization that specializes in Chinese Dance, aiming to spread the beauty and joy of Chinese Dance.

Pittsburgh Chinese School 匹兹堡中文学校

Pittsburgh Chinese School (PCS) was founded in 1977 and has operated as a non-profit organization since. Its mission is to provide a structured environment for learning Chinese language, culture, and arts, while promoting multinational and multiethnic culture activities in the Pittsburgh area.

PCS is located at Allderdice High School in Squirrel Hill. It serves approximately 250 students, ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as adult learners, with a team of more than 50 teachers and staff. There are two semesters in a school year and 14-18 weeks per semester. Classes take place on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. The first two hours are dedicated to language lessons, followed by an hour of culture & arts. In addition to language and cultural studies, PCS organizes various student competitions, seminars, and stage performances throughout the year. It also provides community service and volunteer opportunities for high school and college students, assisting eligible applicants in applying for the “Presidential Volunteer Service Award” and the “Community Service Award.”

PCCC Art Group 匹兹堡中华文化中心艺术团

The Art Group of Pittsburgh Chinese Culture Center (PCCC) was established in 2016.  It provides a diversified platform for choir groups, dance team, Qipao team and drama club. Members receive instructions from professional instructors, learn and practice on the weekend all year round. They have presented on different stages, from the dining area of the retirement home or the courtyard of the hospital, to the professional stages that host world-class artists. They have connected with the audience, young and old, different races, different nationalities, and they made significant contributions for increasing awareness of Chinese culture and enriching lives in diverse communities.
